A Nairobi Law Court has detained a suspect who has been deceiving Nairobi County residents.

According to the charge sheet, Geoffrey Mandela Kengere has been labelled a ringleader of a criminal syndicate which has been conning people using Mike Sonko’s pseudo social media accounts aka ‘parody accounts.’

He was apprehended on Monday 4 November, 2019 at a city hotel where he had gone to collect Ksh. 80,000 from one of his unsuspecting victims- a nurse. Nairobi County’s Security and Compliance Chief Officer Tito Kilonzi said the suspect had made a fake job transfer letter dated October 29 and demanded Ksh. 80,000 facilitation from the nurse.

The Investigating officer of the case, Corporal Urbanus Mungutu (attached to DCI City Hall) informed the court that he is undertaking investigations into the alleged offence of conspiracy to defraud as contrary to Section 317 of the Kenyan Penal Code. He further stated that the accused had defrauded members of the public by issuing them with forged Nairobi County official government documents and as a result many have been conned millions of shillings.

The detectives from the City Hall Directorate of Criminal Investigation applied for more time to complete investigations that include inter alia a search inside the suspect’s premises; analysis by the cyber-crime unit of information derived from his mobile phone, email and social media accounts; interrogation and recording statements of witnesses connecting the suspect to other fraud cases.

Furthermore, the police said they were yet to record statements from Mandela who is a resident of Lamu County.

Milimani Principal Magistrate Martha Nanzushi, allowed the application and ordered that the suspect to be held in custody at the Central police station for 5 more days.
